Cold Open Question of the Week: When I mention the name, Dan Faltyn, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
Our evening began in Dan Faltyn’s comfortable study in his Raleigh, N.C. apartment, where the candlelight was just right, the hi-fi was in the background, and the Havana Club rum (from Cuba) and Pepsi were delicious.
Dan is a Northeast Pennsylvania native, having graduated from Bishop O’Hara High School in Dunmore before moving onto the University of Scranton, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science.
After graduation, Dan moved to New York City, mainly because that’s where most of his friends were moving.
While working on Wall Street for firms such as JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Dan earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from Columbia University. Dan relocated to the Raleigh-Durham area in 2020 for his job, and currently works for Google.
We discuss Dan’s career, going from “Joe Programmer” to leading IT Security teams, and how he keeps up with ever-changing technology, and much more…
Pastimes:
Jumping out of Planes: Dan has more than 1,500 skydiving jumps, including in beautiful locales such as Oahu, Hawaii, Egypt, and one at night.
Dan is a world traveler, having recently visited Iraq, where he toured one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces.
After living in New York City for 20 years, Dan says he’s adapted easily to suburban life, including an enjoyable commute to the Google office. However, it was harder than you’d expect for a 40-something who hasn’t driven in 25 years to get car insurance!
Gary’s News of the Weird: Churchill’s golden throne goes missing; and Wisconsinites prefer their Old Fashioneds with brandy.
