Cold Open Question of the Week: Gary, what’s the best golf shot you ever hit?
This week’s episode is a near and dear one to me and Gary.
Today would have been our friend and classmate Chris Lewis’ 48th birthday. Unfortunately, Chris passed away in 2014 from brain cancer at the age of 37. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and son, Christopher.
As you will hear on this podcast, Chris Lewis was truly one-of-a-kind. A friend and confidante to many. He never met a stranger, he just met new friends, something I can personally attest to.
For the ninth year, Lisa, along with her brother, Mark Davies, and with the help of family and friends, will host the Christopher Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 8 a.m. at Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor, Pa.
Caitlin Damiano, one of Chris’ first cousins and a member of the Planning Committee for the event, joins us this week to reminisce about and discuss her cousin, the origin and mission behind the annual golf outing and what Chris’ legacy means to friends, family and future students.
The fruits of the tournament include funding the Christopher J. Lewis ‘99 Memorial Scholarship to a freshman psychology major at Marywood University, Chris’ alma mater. In the fall of 2018, a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 was awarded. And beginning in the Fall of 2023, that amount was increased to $2,500.
In addition, an inaugural donation of $500 was also made to Penn State Scranton’s Spring 2019 Intramural Program in appreciation for the Chris Lewis Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Chris was working as an Enrollment Services Specialist at the Penn State campus at the time of his illness.
