Episode 116: The One About AI Journalism

Hurricane Helene, Favre has Parkinsons, MAGA hats get banned, and Kelly Clarkson

Cold Open Question of the Week: What song lyrics have you completely memorized?

Hurricane Helene: A new storm — which will strengthen into Hurricane Helene -- is taking aim at Florida. It’s forecasted to make landfall along the Big Bend area as a hurricane on Thursday. Is Gary prepping? Schools closing? Work from home?

AI in Sports Journalism: Brian has concerns over a piece he read by Brian Mortiz on Substack.

  • Where will young journalists get their start? What is the long-term effect of journalism?

  • Olivia Nuzzi, a New York magazine reporter put on leave due a "personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign." That relationship was with RFK Jr. She also dated Keith Olbermann, then 55, when she was 21.

  • TikTok Bans Russian Accounts: According to ABCNews.com TikTok has removed accounts associated with Russian state media for engaging in “covert influence operations” ahead of the U.S. presidential election.

MAGA Hats Banned at Mets Games: Fans were barred from entering Citi Field and the Arizona Cardinals stadium this past week while wearing Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats.

Favre Has Parkinsons: The Hall of Famer disclosed before a House this week that he has been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, a brain disorder that causes movement problems and other health issues. Favre has also spokenly publicly about the number and severity of the concussions he experienced while playing in the NFL.

Zelenskyy in Scranton: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited a Scranton’s Army Ammunition Plant this Sunday. The delegation, including Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey and Gov. Josh Shapiro, signed bombs that will be used in the war against Russia. Odd to be autographing a weapon you know will be used to potentially kill someone. **He has also now done as many sitdown interviews with American journalists as Vice President Kamala Harris.

A picture of Senator Casey shaking President Zelenskyy’s hand surrounded by several other people and ammunition casings.

Camping this Weekend: It’s STEM weekend for the Scouts. Looking forward to fall camping and the camp fire.

Kelly Clarkson covers Chappell Roan: Enjoy this eargasm: “Good Luck, Babe!”
